Book Reading with Dolores Brandon
The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre (Toronto, ON) is pleased to invite you to join us on October 25th at 7 PM in the Student Welcome and Resource Centre, when author Dolores Brandon will perform a reading and provide reflections on her memoir, The Root Is Bitter, The Root Is Sweet: In the Shadow of Madness.
Brandon’s non-traditional memoir artfully blends poetry, prose, and family photographs to reflect on how mental illness has affected her family and bears witness to the complexity and beauty of their endurance. Her father was diagnosed with manic-depressive disorder in the 1950s and 60s and was a patient at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital in what is now Etobicoke, Ontario. Brandon, the eldest of three daughters, describes her childhood against the backdrop of her father’s violent rages, along with the turbulent mix of love and fear that her family felt for him and how it shaped their lives. As she tells her own story, she also draws a parallel between the inner workings of domestic violence, misogyny, racism, and religious intolerance, and the shadow of illness and instability that haunted her own family. With her father’s failing health it became apparent that both his legacy and the legacy of his illness would continue to be a presence in the life of her family long after he was gone.
