Flourishing, the most fulfilling way to live, involves realizing the best within ourselves while enriching the lives of others. These pursuits might seem opposed—giving to others can lead to compromising or losing vital aspects of ourselves—but self-care is the foundation of intimacy, and intimacy is the culmination of self-care.
Through a combination of lecture, group discussion, and experiential practices drawn from the best of the Western psychotherapeutic and Eastern meditative and yogic traditions, Jeffrey B. Rubin teaches us tools for flourishing, even in challenging times.
This workshop aims to honor the spirit of Jeffrey Seinfeld, professor, therapist, and scholar, who both looked honestly at the difficulties human beings confront, even as he embodied an everyday spirituality, a passionate, authentic, and benevolent attitude in his life and work.
In this workshop we will:
• Gain clarity and equanimity in the face of the speed that surrounds us
• Access the untapped creativity within ourselves to imaginatively address the challenges that confront us
• Handle our emotions wisely
• Bring spirituality down to earth and into our lives
At the end of the workshop, we will view the unabridged film footage featuring Dr. Jeffrey Seinfeld discussing the paper by Dr. Jeffrey Rubin at the ORI's 2010 annual conference "Psychoanalysis and Spirituality".

Report about the event - by Dr. Jeffrey Lewis:
On a bright, brisk Sunday morning, May 5, 2013 a collaboration between St. John’s University, specifically the Psychology Department and the Office of Postgraduate Professional Development, and the Object Relations Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy held a 3 hour program entitled, Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Seinfeld’s Work On Spirituality In Psychotherapy and In Everyday Life: The Art Of Flourishing. The workshop was led and prepared by Dr. Jeffrey Rubin a practicing psychotherapist and one of the leading integrators of the Western psychotherapeutic and Eastern meditative traditions. The event took place from at the Downtown Campus of St. John’s University located at 101 Murray Street, just steps from the World Trade Center site.
Dr. Rubin’s presentation, utilizing aspects of his most recent publication, a book titled The Art of Flourishing, “illuminated those forces in the world that are driving us crazy and those personal and collective resources we can draw on to not only stay sane, but to flourish in challenging times”. The workshop began with a group meditative experience in which Dr. Rubin had everyone at first quietly spend time being in touch, with eyes closed, with what and how they were feeling. This was later followed by an exercise of trying to empty one’s mind and be aware of sounds in the environment, including silence, and then join and become merged with them. This was followed by another experimental exercise of paying attention to one’s breathing and other bodily sensations and the changes which occurred since the original registering of feelings. Dr. Rubin then spent time explaining his 6 types of spirituality in depth.
The moderator, Dr. Jeffrey I. Lewis, on faculty at ORI and a full clinical professor at St. John’s University informed those assembled that the day’s event marked the first of a hoped-for ongoing co-sponsorship involving ORI and St. John’s, and the launch of a 3 tiered enterprise known for now as the Dr. Jeffrey Seinfeld Memorial Foundation. The Dr. Rubin workshop was the first of a planned series of lectures and workshops, all honoring some aspect or derivative of Dr. Seinfeld’s thinking and oeuvre. Our next work in this series will take place on featuring Dr. Schwartz in a presentation entitled, Honoring the Legacy Of Dr. Seinfeld’s work on “bad-object” and “empty core” – Moving from the Prison of Pornography to the Freedom of Relatedness .
The 2nd tier of the Memorial Foundation is to consist of an archival effort to collect, catalogue and make accessible unfinished works, audio and videos not widely seen and a piecing together of a biographical documentary as a full length video. And the 3rd tier is to involve establishing a Scholarship Fund, which will provide full or partial scholarships to attend and participate in ORI classes and certificate-granting programs to gifted and worthy students.
This was followed by a note of appreciation to ORI director, Dr. Susan Kavaler-Adler who brought Dr. Seinfeld into the Institute 22 years ago where he remained very active in conferences and workshops in a Postdoctoral Institute in which he felt truly at home due to its unique place in New York, representing the theories, practice motifs and study of the British Object Relations branch of psychoanalytic thought. Dr. Kavaler-Adler spoke of her close intellectual and personal relationship with Dr. Seinfeld and their mutual admiration for each other.
The workshop concluded with a 45 minute, unabridged film footage featuring Dr. Jeffrey Seinfeld discussing the paper delivered by Dr. Jeffrey Rubin at ORI’s 2010 annual conference on “Psychoanalysis and Spirituality”. This was followed by 20-30 minutes of attendee’s recounting their love, respect aNd reverence for Jeffrey Seinfeld.
We’d like to thank Dr. Rafael Javier and his graduate assistant Christy DaBreo of the St. John’s Office of Postgraduate Professional Development for making it possible to utilize the St. John’s Downtown facilities, and Dr. Inna Rozentsvit, the ORI Administrator for making sure of the details enabling this event to take place.
