Dream Interpretation and Appreciation:
Montague Ullman’s Visionary Method

8-week Experiential Course with Dr. Jeffrey B. Rubin
Virtual Live
Tuesdays, October 20 – December 15, 2026, 7:30-9:30 pm ET
Continuing Education: 14.5 CE Hours for APA, NYS Psychologists, NYS Social Workers

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Dreaming is not a side activity of the mind — it is one of the psyche’s most intimate ways of processing emotional life, memory, relationship, and meaning. In dreams, we do not speak in ordinary language. We speak in image, metaphor, and affect. When approached with care, dreams can become a direct pathway to insight, integration, creativity, and psychological freedom.

This live, experiential course introduces participants to Montague Ullman’s distinctive method of dream appreciation and interpretation — a respectful, psychologically sophisticated approach to working with dreams in both group and individual settings. Ullman’s method is especially valuable for clinicians because it preserves the dreamer’s authority while also making room for the group’s imagination, emotional resonance, and relational intelligence.

Participants often describe Ullman-style dreamwork as unexpectedly grounding, often moving, and frequently illuminating — not because it imposes meaning, but because it helps meaning emerge from the dream’s emotional truth.

“All of us are continually reworking unfinished emotional business from the past. Our dreams seem to be way stations along which these concerns pass, creating the possibility for recognition and exploration” (M. Ullman, Appreciating Dreams, a Group Approach)

Why does this method stand out:

Ullman’s approach offers a rare balance: it is structured but not rigid, depth-oriented but not doctrinaire, and clinically useful without reducing dreams to technique. It supports:

  • A clear, step-by-step process you can use in treatment and consultation
  • A relational way to think about dreams (dreamer + listener + group field)
  • A “permission-giving” atmosphere in which even small dream fragments matter

“A dream cannot be too short for the group to work on… it can have a holographic quality…” (M. Ullman, Appreciating Dreams, a Group Approach)

What to expect in each session:

Each class includes: a short meditation practice, intensive exploration of a dream, brief discussion of suggested readings, and group dialogue/process.
Suggested readings are provided as resources rather than treated as a mandatory list.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Assess and analyze the value of dreams and the unique contribution of Montague Ullman
  • Interpret and amplify dreams in the group setting
  • Analyze creativity and metaphor in dreams
  • Emphasize that the ultimate authority for the meaning of the dream is the dreamer
  • Apply dreamwork in clinical practice
  • Apply dreamwork in forming dream groups using the Ullman technique

Who should attend:

Interested lay participants drawn to self-exploration and the psychology of meaning

A guiding principle:
