COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Ferenczi’s “Confusion of Tongues between the Child and the Adults” set the stage for Michael Balint’s concept of verbal capacity as a separate line of development from that of the psycho-sexual zones. This course will follow both lines of development in the theory and practice of Object Relations oriented psychoanalysis.

Included in the readings will be Ferenczi’s paper above, as wells his thoughts on Identification,  Introjection, Regression and The Stages of Development of a Sense of Reality.

Selections from Balint’s THE BASIC FAULT and THRILLS AND REGRESSIONS will be read, and traces to Ferenczi’s works will be explored. Each class will include student presentations of clinical vignettes to illustrate the theories.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this educational activity, its participants will be able to:

1) Analyze Balint’s concept of verbal capacity as a separate line of development from that of the psycho-sexual zones.

2) Compare both lines of development, psycho-sexual and verbal capacity, in the theory and practice of Object Relations oriented psychoanalysis.

3) Utilize Ferenczi’s concepts of internalization, development of objects and contact with reality in their clinical practice.

4) Discuss Ferenczi’s stages in the development of a sense of reality.

5) Analyze “the confusion of tongues between the adults and the child” concept in psycho-traumatology.

6) Discuss the “problem of acceptance of unpleasant ideas” and their meaning in person’s development.

7) Discuss Balint’s move of Ferenczi’s theory into clinical practice, concurrence with and moderation of classical technique.

9) Utilize Balint’s “Basic Fault” theory in assessment of childhood trauma.

10) Utilize Balint’s “Basic Fault” theory in understanding personality disorders.

11) Compare and analyze “regression in the service of the ego” from “malignant” regression.

12) Discuss Ferenczi’s understanding of preverbal trauma and the use of regression.

13) Discuss Balint’s understanding of the excitement and fear of regression, “primary love,” and “new beginning.”

14) Utilize Ferenczi’s stages in the development of a sense of reality.

15) Discuss Ferenczi’s concept of the child analysis in the analysis of adults.

EXPANDING THE FOCUS ON PREVERBAL TRAUMA IN CLINICAL PRACTICE

Building on Ferenczi’s focus on preverbal trauma and the use of regression, Balint explores the excitement and fear of regression, primary love, new beginning and differentiates regression in the service of the ego from malignant regression. Balint moves the theory into clinical practice, concurrence with and moderation of classical technique.

Stefanie Teitelbaum, LCSW, NPsyA, B. Music – is the Supervisor, Training Analyst, Faculty of NPAP and IEA; Dean of Students, IEA; Instructor/Faculty, Training Analyst, Training Supervisor, ORI. She is the former staff psychotherapist at the Lower East Side Service Center’s Drug-Free Outpatient Program. Stefanie Teitelbaum is in private psychoanalytic practice in New York City.
