Introduction to the Object Relations Clinical Theory & Technique of Psychotherapy

1st Trimester of Year 1 of the Full Training in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis

(can be also taken as an individual post-graduate certificate course; no pre-requisites)

This course will introduce students to critical psychic structure issues related to character disorder pathology and the related developmental issues.  Clinical technique will be addressed through both readings in British and American object relations theory, as well as in “in vivo” role playing demonstrations. Through the role playing, the students will have an opportunity to experience their patients from the inside out. Various character resistances will be discussed in relation to Donald W. Winnicott’s contributions to this topic, as well as to some representatives of American school of object relations, such Althea Horner and Thomas Ogden.

Post-graduate psychoanalytic education credits offered: 12.5hrs.

1st week:

Althea Horner’s book, 2005, Jason Aronson, “Dealing with Resistance in Psychotherapy”

Introduction, pp. vii through xxiii.

Chapter 1: “The Core Relationship Problem as Resistance, pp. 1-14.

2nd Week:

Chapter 2: “Constructing the Developmental Hypothesis.”

3rd week:

“Countertransference Resistance and Therapeutic Impasse”

Next five week readings are from Thomas Ogden’s 1986 Jason Aronson book, “The Matrix of the Mind.”

4th week:

“The Matrix of the Mind,” chapters 1 and 2:

Chapter 1: “The Psychoanalytic Dialogue” pp. 1 through 9.

Chapter 2: “Instinct, Phantasy, and Psychological Deep Structure in the Work of Melanie Klein.”

5th week:

Chapter 3: “The Paranoid Schizoid Position: Self as Object,” pp. 3 - 63.

6th week:

Chapter 4: “The Depressive Position and the Birth of the Historical Subject,” pp. 67 – 100.

7th week:

Chapter 5:  “Between the Paranoid Schizoid and Depressive Position,” pp. 101 - 130.

8th week:

Chapter 6: “Internal Object Relations,” pp. 131-166.

9th week:

Dr. Kavaler-Adler’s clinical article, from the American Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2005, “The Case of David.”

10th week:

Dr. Kavaler-Adler’s clinical article, from the American Journal of Psychoanalysis, 2006,

“Anatomy of Regret…” (about the transformation of a schizoid personality).
