This workshop will draw on the theoretical and clinical views of Melanie Klein, Ronald Fairbairn, Donald Winnicott, and Masud Kahn. We will explore and describe the interface between these views and contemporary spiritual, religious, and cultural issues. We will demonstrate how we utilize object relations in the clinical situation today, in the context of contemporary socio-cultural issues. These socio-cultural issues often manifest in client's narratives, traumas and internalized object relations. Object relations clinical theory has always drawn on spiritual cultural metaphors such as exorcism of internal demonic objects, possession by bad objects, etc. While we present and discuss the interface between culture and object relations theory, we will remain centered on the direct application to clinical practice.
